Recycling Program in Pulau Sakar, Lahad Datu

On 8 February 2025, the recycled material purchasing program was successfully held on Pulau Sakar as part of a high-impact initiative to promote recycling practices among island communities and reduce environmental pollution, particularly marine litter. The program aimed to engage local residents by providing a platform for them to trade recyclable materials such as plastics and aluminium to the Sabah Environmental Protection Organization.

Through this program, residents not only received financial incentives from selling recyclables but also gained valuable knowledge and awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management. These efforts contribute directly to the protection of the marine ecosystem from pollution threats—especially plastic waste.
This approach also helps reduce the habit of disposing waste into the sea, which is still common in remote areas with limited access to proper waste management systems. The program reflects a meaningful step towards building a cleaner, more sustainable, and environmentally conscious community in Pulau Sakar.
